One postdoctoral position

Application deadline 10 September 2021

One 9-months postdoctoral position to conduct research on remote sensing of oil pollution in remote areas of the world, including the Amazonian rainforests and the Siberian taiga. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to a project financed by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MCIU/AEI/ESF, UE) and mainly devote their time to analyze satellite imagery and publish scientific papers in high-ranked international research journals.

The ‘Near Real-Time Monitoring of Oil Spills’ project aims at evaluating the use of remote sensors (satellite or UAVs borne multispectral images) for oil spill detection and, their coupling with low-cost and user-friendly devices and mobile apps to create an alert system for quick response to oil spills in the global tropical rainforests and other remote areas of the world. Given the nature of the project, we are particularly interested in candidates with a background on remote sensing in tropical rainforests and a commitment to building a just and equitable world. It is expected that candidates will contribute to remote sensing analysis and to write research papers. Potential topics include the following themes:

  • Oil spills detection in tropical rainforests with high spatial resolution imagery (Sentinel 2, Planet, IKONOS or SPOT)
  • Oil spills detection in Siberia with high spatial resolution imagery (Sentinel 2, Planet, IKONOS or SPOT)
  • Chronology of oil spills from historical Landsat imagery

Requirements

  • PhD in remote sensing.
  • Command of English to write scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals as lead author.
  • Track record of publications as first or corresponding author.
  • (preferable) Previous research experience on remote sensing in tropical rainforests.

Our offer

  • The academic home of researchers will be the Faculty of Science and Technology (UVic-UCC), and the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA), supervised by Martí Orta, Pedro Mayor and Gorka Muñoa.
  • The selected researcher will receive a full-time postdoctoral salary and equipment.
  • Funding is available for 9 months.
  • Support to apply for postdoctoral grants (Margarita Salas, Beatriu de PinósMaría Zambrano, etc) for long-term engagement with the ImpactAnt Research Group.

Application procedure

Interested candidates should send an application including a brief statement of motivation and a CV.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by videoconference and successful ones will be asked to immediately join the project. The application deadline is 10 September 2021. Applications as well as questions of clarification should be sent to both marti.orta@ub.edu and PedroGines.Mayor@uab.cat

Two Postdoctoral positions

Application deadline 7 September 2021

Two fully-funded one-year postdoctoral positions to conduct research on environmental pollution of oil extraction and mining in remote areas of the world, including the rainforests of the Amazon and Central Africa to the Siberian taiga. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to a project financed by the by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MCIU/AEI/FEDER, UE) and mainly devote their time to publish scientific papers in high-ranked international research journals.

The ‘TropOil&Lead’ project aims at providing new insights into chemical pollution in remote areas of the planet, and at establishing their potential sources. Given the nature of the project, we are particularly interested in candidates with a background on environmental health and a commitment to building a just and equitable world. It is expected that candidates will contribute to field, lab tasks, data analyses and, mainly, to write research papers. Potential topics include the following themes:

  • Oil extraction in the Amazon, heavy metal pollution and health risks
  • Oil extraction in Siberia, reindeer husbandry and health risks
  • Lead-based ammunition, subsistence hunting and health risks
  • Geophagy, mineral licks and contaminant exposure
  • Illegal gold mining and mercury bioaccumulation

Requirements

  • PhD in ecology, environmental science, veterinary, biology, epidemiology or other cognate fields.
  • Command of English to write scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals as lead author.
  • Track record of publications as first or corresponding author.
  • (preferable) Previous research experience in either Peru, Brazil, Cameroon or Siberia.

Our offer

  • The academic home of researchers will be the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) and the Departament de Sanitat i Anatomia Animals (UAB), supervised by Martí Orta and Pedro Mayor.
  • Short periods (2-3 weeks) of field work might be required in Siberia and/or Italy.
  • The selected researchers will receive a full-time postdoctoral salary, equipment and, a bursary covering field expenses.
  • Funding is available for one year.

The application deadline is 7 September 2021. Applications as well as questions of clarification should be sent to both marti.orta@ub.edu and PedroGines.Mayor@uab.cat

PhD projects, open calls

PhD student offers, in the framework of the PALADYN-ERC project. Open call during 2021-22, for the following topics:

  • Biogeochemistry of pyrogenic carbon in the ocean. The aim of the project is to study the source and deep ocean fate of biomass burning aerosols from wildfires in tropical Africa and South America, and quantify their contribution to the marine carbon cycle. The data generated will be used towards the development of a biogeochemical model and the appraisal of pyrogenic carbon as a proxy in paleoclimate research.
Applicants should have a background in either/or analytical chemistry/environmental science/oceanography at BSc or MSc level: and availability to undertake oceanographic fieldwork.
  • Palaeoclimate reconstruction of global atmospheric circulation in episodes of extreme climate. The aim of the project is to understand the dynamics and patterns of variability of the global atmosphere during episodes of extreme climates, with a focus on the tropics and shifts in the hydrological cycle. The work will focus on the geochemical characterization of deep sea sediment cores spanning thousands to millions of years.
Applicants should have a background in the Earth, Environmental or Chemical sciences at BSc or MSc level: and availability to undertake oceanographic fieldwork.

The application should include the CV, a statement of interest and the names and contact details of two references.
