Postdoctoral researcher

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Barcelona. I hold a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Cambridge, and I have previously worked at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB). I coordinate the Global Atlas of Environmental Justice (EJAtlas.org), the world's largest environmental conflict database. I regularly write for news outlets such as El País, and collaborate with international environmental justice organisations.

My current research lines involve:

 - The stranded assets of oil and gas companies. If we are to mitigate the worst impacts of the climate crisis and limit global heating to 1.5ºC nearly all known coal, oil and gas reserves need to stay underground. Fossil fuel companies, whether private or state-owned, are standing to lose trillions of dollars of unrealised revenue if their assets are to remain underground. Quantifying the size of stranded assets for each fossil fuel company can send a signal to investors and policymakers, and illustrate the scale of the political interests the fossil fuel industry has in perpetuating the extraction of coal, oil and gas.

 - The victories of the environmental justice movement. Grassroots movements for environmental and climate justice are a global force to leave fossil fuels underground. Although the task at hand is enormous, organised resistance around the world has managed to stop fossil fuel extraction projects in the past. To limit the worst impacts of the climate crisis, the world needs to see an escalation of movements to prevent future and cancel current fossil fuel extraction. Through a global statistical political ecology review of historic cases of victories for the movement to leave fossil fuels in the ground documented in the EJAtlas we want to inform the strategies of future movements going forward to increase their chances of success, and our collective change to survival and justice.
